Inspired by a local case about three daughters challenging their father’s will on capacity, Shakespeare begins King Lear with a question: which of the king’s daughters merits the greatest share of his kingdom, and what must she do to earn it? Having set this scenario in motion, with devastating results, by the end of the first scene Lear has begun a harrowing journey to the very gates of hell.
King Lear asks the questions: Why is personal justice so often at odds with – or unmet by – the systems of justice we live by (and even sometimes control)? How can life meet everyone’s needs for justice? The program, with Shakespearean scholar Philippa Kelly, will prompt all of us to delve into these questions in our professional lives or probate practices, and with our own families. Program qualifies for 1.0 MCLE credit.
